Where would I start looking for a job that deals w/ either conserving the environment, being around nature...?

The caveat is I have a BS in Business Administration - now I know you wonder why I chose to educate myself w/ something I have little interest in - thats a whole other story.

Anyway I'd like a job dealing w/ nature and the environment, where do I start looking? I'd like to either be working in a beach area, or mountains. I am in California by the way.

Your degree even in another discipline shows you are a go getter, and municipalities, cities, counties, and states mostly all have construction inspectors who protect the environment from people like me. Although they are sometimes a thorn in my heel, I am glad that they are there protecting my area for my children. You can also pursue a field in which you are qualified for and volunteer in your spare time. In my town (we are coastal) there is an organization that looks for sea turtle nests and works to protect them. Also the adopt-a-stream/beach/highway programs are very beneficial. You do not have to have a career in environmental sciences to be an environmentalist, it can be as easy as deciding to. Good luck and I appreciate where your heart is and people like you.
Reply:what about applying to work for some eco-tourist business.

Reply:Park Ranger. What you are looking for basically describes a park ranger. Plus they have a couple more duties.
Reply:work at a state park
Reply:Try applying with the national, state, and local parks departments--it should get you out into nature--and will probably have good benefits. One of those departments probably has responsibility for the beaches--check out which one.

Other than that, you could apply to work for a non-profit environmental group--your degree may do you some good there.

I have seen government employees checking the water at the beaches (taking to labs to be tested for purity, etc.)--that was up in Idaho/Washington.

If you don't find a permanent job right away, you might want to go with a seasonal job at a lake, park, etc.--while still looking for permanent employment.

You are looking to do great things--I wish you a lot of luck.
Reply:I just spent a weekend out on Morro Strand State Beach. The 'camp host' job looks REALLY good. I don't know what they pay but he gets to live RIGHT THERE. I'd say to call up the park services and see what's open.

I have noticed alot of YOUNG rangers out there too. Seems like a great job if you want to be in that setting. Getting paid to HIKE and enjoy nature. Almost seems criminal LOL

Reply:The problem with some college degrees is that they are very vague in their title... like philosophy... or sociology... but your is better... You can work in the human resources department of non for profit agencies (which pays little... so be warned) that deal with the environment... you could work for the Park Department in your state... even in park enforcement... I did that with a BA in English... I rode around in an ATV and told people to get their dogs off the beach.. the only fun part was the ATV... You could work for the Department of Health in human resources or even do investigation of companies who break the law when it comes to pollution... Tell your perspective employees that you plan to get your Masters (even if you are not) in whatever title you are going for... like environmental law... or law enforcement... or ecology... Don't feel like you are stuck. There are choices out there, you just don't know what they are right now... and I hardly know what they are, but I'm trying. Good luck.
Reply:Well - Having just completed a BSc in Environmental Economics, I thought I would be inundated with offers for environment related jobs!!

Unfortunately, it is a very very sought after market and wages for paid positions are relatively low, additionally there is extremely tough competition (so many people love it).

So your easiest way in would be to volunteer and rack up some hands on experience points in the field - which will immediately make you more desirable as a paid employee compared to the rest of the job hungry pack!
