I am looking for a job in higher ed? what is the best way to get my foot in the door?

Start reading the career section of the Chronicle of Higher Education, which is available free online. You will find advertisements for faculty, staff, and administrative positions in higher education. Also, you will find very sound advice columns.

Also, be selective in the positions you apply for. First, decide where, geographically, you are willing to live/work. Second, only apply for positions for which you meet the minimum requirements. Third, in your cover letter (always include a cover letter) directly address how you meet the minimum requirements and the prefered (or desirable) qualifications.

When you are working on your PhD, work as a TA. Then apply, apply, apply at all levels and hope for an interview. Starting at a community college tends to be easier than a private university.

Good Luck!
Reply:Merries gives great advice. If you aren't familiar with professional associations, check out the NASPA and ACPA websites for job search functions. Other associations that are more field-specific can be helpful as well.
