My husband is looking for an engineering job?

he has a BEng in Mechanical Design and Technology from 2004 and since then spent 1 year working on an offshore oil rig. Due to the family business he has had to work in in for the past couple of years. He is now looking for an engineering job but is finding it hard to find a company to give him the opportunity.

Any advice?

He's at a disadvantage because companies consider him to have 1 year experience (5 years ago) or even entry level. Doesn't mean he can't turn that into a positive though. He should build a good story to explain what he did in the family business and how this makes him a good employee (entrepeneurial sprit, dealing with customers, etc.). It's going to be a lot of contacting and hopefully interviewing. Hang in there, the jobs are out there, you have to be persistent and flexible.

Reply:Another suggestion, tailor the resume to talk up the strengths of his experience with the family business. Engineering graduates typically have the background in the physics involved but often do not have background in working with others, dealing with customers, supervising employees, meeting deadlines, delivering products or services on time, analyzing costs, working with government or environmental regulations, dealing with banks, etc. There are usually lots of activities involved in running any small business that your average engineering graduate knows nothing about.

Also, a college degree provides some foundation knowledge of facts and figures but the most valuable skill most people learn in college is how to learn. In most jobs and in virtually every engineering job, you have to learn quickly and continue to learn through out your career.

Good luck, It is a challenging time to be looking for a job.
Reply:Have him join ASME and go to local section meetings. If he's good at networking and making connections with other engineers he'll greatly increase his chances of receiving a job. It may take a while so he should look into something temporary until he finds the career he wants.
