I recently lost my job, and I am looking for professional speaking development. Any suggestions?

I am finding that I am particularly bad at first impressions. Dangerously, I think that the inverview went well, but as it turns out, my appearance and demeanor exudes "kindness", "gentleness" and "a lack of confidence". Maybe the first two are not bad qualities, but they do not line up well with my professional work experience. My experience has been in sales and relationship management and training. All three of these careers are looking for more aggressive, confident behavior. I am aggressive and confident, but I struggle with the first impression. Does anyone have a suggestion for a public speaking/professional development class that really helped you? I am looking at Dale Carnegie, but I'm not sure i want to sink $2000.00 in to something I don't know much about. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

You might try Toastmasters. There is probably a chapter in your neighborhood. It is an economical way of getting public speaking experience.

You go through a series of ten speaking projects that force you to focus upon specifc goals. You then have to present your speach assignment in front of your group. You are timed, graded, and critiqued by your peers and by people who have lots of experience. I found it helpful.

Regards.
Reply:Toastmasters International has chapters everywhere, and helps develop public speaking/presentation skills. That would be my first bet for a very low-cost option (there are dues for the meetings, but it won't be $2k.)

You might also consider a public speaking course at a local community college, or even an acting gig at a community theater. Any of these will teach you to appear more confident in front of others.

Good luck.
Reply:Look for a Toastmasters club in your area they are excellent in training you for public speaking.
Reply:I highly recommend Toastmasters.

you can find a group in your city that will have people with your similar interests and background

you can go as far as you care to, even international competions. very reasonable costs

if you can not find a group close to you, get a sponsor group and start your own group

also you mignt try Dale Carnagie
